Woodturning and Cabinetmaking in the Jura Mountains Protected by a Geographical Indication
Since November 28, 2025, woodturning and cabinetmaking in the Jura Mountains have officially benefited from an industrial and artisanal Geographical Indication (GI), approved by the INPI (French National Institute of Industrial Property). This recognition, the result of a collaborative project led by Creativewood and Fibois BFC, promotes ancestral know-how and preserves centuries-old woodworking trades threatened by international competition. Since the Middle Ages, artisans in the Haut-Jura have crafted skittles, boxes, furniture, and decorations from local wood species such as beech, boxwood, and spruce, using unique woodturning and cabinetmaking techniques and custom-designed machinery. This expertise is based on a close link between the region and its know-how, now guaranteed by the GI. The geographical area covers all the municipalities of the Jura Mountains (Doubs, Jura, Ain, and the Territoire de Belfort), and requires that the essential stages of production be carried out locally. The GI charter offers visibility, protection, and promotion to regional businesses and artisans.
