Since November 28, 2025, the woodturning and woodworking of the Jura Mountains have officially benefited from a Geographical Indication (GI) for industrial and artisanal products, approved by the INPI (French National Institute of Industrial Property). This recognition, the result of a collaborative project led by Creativewood and Fibois BFC, promotes ancestral know-how and preserves centuries-old woodworking trades threatened by international competition. Since the Middle Ages, artisans in the Haut-Jura have crafted skittles, boxes, furniture, and decorations from local wood species such as beech, boxwood, and spruce, using unique woodturning and woodworking techniques and custom-designed machinery. This expertise is based on a close link between the region and its know-how, now guaranteed by the GI. The geographical area covers all the municipalities of the Jura Mountains (Doubs, Jura, Ain, and the Territoire de Belfort), and requires that the essential stages of production be carried out locally. The IG charter offers visibility, protection and promotion to regional businesses and artisans.
